"I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him." 1 Samuel 1:27
We had a great day today visiting the ancient city of Ping Yao. This walled city was at the end of the Silk Road and was home to many merchants and thus became a prosperous place with China's first banks. The city remains very similar to its original state with incredible architecture.
We began early this morning and left our hotel at 8:30am. Our children have slept pretty well with little jet lag. Naomi has been up around 5am each morning, but Davis and Hong Hui have had to be woken up each day. Hong Hui has greeted me with a smile each day and a warm "Good Morning." This is one of the first English words I heard from her.
The Dodds had a great day full of shopping and touring Ping Yao. It was hot! Hong Hui, like many Chinese, tries to avoid the sun as much as possible. She spent much of the day trying to find shady spots to walk in. We had ice cream bars, bought treasures and memories. Our favorite kind of day. Naomi chose a traditional bracelet made from carvings of Peach wood shown to the right. Davis chose a bamboo sword of course. Hong Hui chose a few treasures. A tea set, a lacquer jewelry box which the area is famous for and peach wood bracelets. Christe chose a set of carved peach wood earrings.
We saw much traditional food being made including flatbread cooked on hot stones and noodles grated from a block of dough and cooked in a pot.
Our guide, Jessica accompanied us and had a great time as well. She has never been to this area so it was a first for her. She does not like to bargain, but likes to shop. Being an expert haggler, I helped her get some good deals.
We enjoyed a fast food lunch at McDonalds (Hong Hui's first time ever). We came back this afternoon and rested from the long hot morning. We explored a bit more of our hotel area this evening and are now having noodle bowls in the room for dinner. Dinner cost $1.25 for all of us.
Tomorrow we go to Jinci Temple in the morning and then will join the Stern family from Evergreen again in the afternoon for lunch and a tour of their farm.
We had a great day of communication and language development. Hong Hui is learning and using many new English words and phrases. She is very smart and a quick study. We have been learning many new Mandarin phrases and cause Hong Hui to laugh very often at our poor attempts at pronunciation.
Continue to pray for us. We are still bonding as a family and will be for a long time. God has been so good to us. I think Hong Hui is a perfect compliment to the Dodds. We love her and you will too.
