"Let's Dog!"
Today we traveled from Taiyuan to Guangzhou for the last portion of our trip. Guangzhou
is a big city (13 million, I think) with a melting pot of people. It will be nice to be less
noticeable. There are not many westerners in Taiyuan. Also, the kids wore USA T-shirts
today in honor of Independence Day.
We've been joking all week with Hong Hui about "go" and the Chinese word for dog ("gou")
sounding the same. After breakfast, she played on the words by saying "Let's dog" when it
was time to leave. Not a bad joke for someone who speaks so little English! Truly, we
are amazed at how quickly she's picking up new English words and phrases. She's also
more willing to use the English she has learned in school.
The trip was Hong Hui's first airplane flight. She was a bit nervous prior to takeoff, but she
is an adventurous girl. Coming from a very smoggy coal producing province,
she was enthralled with the blue skies above the clouds and pollution.
The pics on the right are from our hotel room in Taiyuan. No, it's not low clouds or fog.
That is the view she had seen for her whole life.
You can imagine why she exclaimed "Mei Li"(beautiful) when we cleared the clouds.
Hong Hui took several pictures from the plane window like the one to the right.
She had a great time.
We are staying at a lovely hotel in Guangzhou - the Asia International. Brian's uncanny sense
of direction served us well tonight when we headed out for dinner. As we were trying to find a
place to eat, he began to recognize our surrounds and that this hotel is near our favorite
restaurant from Naomi's adoption trip. The Banana Leaf is a Thai restaurant with great decor, yummy
food, and singing and dancing waiters. We were not disappointed. The kids had a good time. Hong Hui
really enjoyed the entertainment and even danced with one of the waiters! Unfortunately, we
had left our camera in the room, so no pics of the fun.
We are bushed and may not get this posted until morning.
